Maya Rudolph and the Roots Performing Prince's "Darling Nikki" Was the Best Thing on TV Last Night

Rich Juzwiak · 09/20/12 10:50AM

As happy as I was with the Big Brother outcome (which I feel like I can't reveal here since this post isn't explicitly labeled as a spoiler reveal and the first rule of the Internet is that you can't say anything about anything anyway) and as much as I enjoyed Honey Boo Boo's bodily functions, Maya Rudolph's appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon took the cake where last night's TV is concerned. She and her friend Gretchen Lieberum are in the Prince cover band Princess, and they brought their take on Tipper Gore's all-time fav Prince song "Darling Nikki" to network TV after Maya spent some time with Jimmy on the couch. Supported by the Roots, Princess' cover is so straightforward that they even do that backwards part that's on the album. Ingenious, but oops, there I go with the spoilers again.

Here's Frank Ocean's Gorgeous First TV Performance

Rich Juzwiak · 07/10/12 01:15AM

Frank Ocean performed his song "Bad Religion" on tonight's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and absolutely destroyed it. Accompanied by a string section, he sang the tale of unrequited love with a man ("I could never make him love me"), which seems to be modeled after the same relationship that he wrote about in his CD's liner notes. When that narrative was posted on Tumblr last week, it amounted to Frank's coming out. This is a stellar performance, particularly when he flips none too gracefully into his falsetto. It's not as fully formed as, say, Usher's, but there's also no vanity there, either — it's pure expression. This song is deeply felt and this performance only makes it deeper.

Lindsay Lohan Begged Lorne Michaels to Let Her Host SNL

Matt Toder · 03/02/12 01:13AM

Lindsay Lohan is hosting Saturday Night Live this week and stopped by Jimmy Fallon's show to make sure everyone knows about it. Before reminiscing about the classic Debbie Downer sketch that they all giggled through during her first hosting appearance, Lohan talked about how she ended up doing the show this time around. Turns out, she hounded Lorne Michaels until he said yes.

Watch Jimmy Fallon Complain About President Obama to Brian Williams

Matt Cherette · 03/23/11 12:34AM

On tonight's Late Night, best guest ever Brian Williams stopped by for a chat with Jimmy Fallon. When the subject of conversation switched to Libya, Fallon got uncharacteristically angry/political and began bashing President Obama and his lack of communication.

Jason Segel Recylces Material on Fallon

Matt Toder · 12/21/10 10:00AM

Sometimes material is just too good to use once and throw away. This seems to be the case with Jason Segel's Kermit story, since he used it last week and again last night on Late Night. Comparison inside.
