The most casual thieves in Madrid made off with around 70 paintings last week after they punched a hole through the wall of a vacant building into an art gallery, local news sites report.

A 43-year-old Venezuelan woman was apprehended at Madrid International Airport with 3.7 pounds of cocaine in her breast implants. Authorities noticed her suspicious behavior during a routine screening of passengers returning from Bogota, Colombia.

We recently suggested that the best thing to do if you fall onto subway tracks is to run away. But let's say you fall, unconscious, onto those tracks, as this woman did in Madrid earlier this week — well, your only hope is that an off-duty policeman is brave enough to leap into the path of an oncoming train and drag you to safety. Spain is in the midst of prolonged and devastating financial crisis. Its economy lost roughly 800,000 jobs last year, more than half of under-25-year-olds are unemployed, and the total unemployment rate is at 26% and growing. So you can imagine how bleak and hopeless people waiting (and working) in one of their umemployment offices might feel.

My new personal hero is Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, better known as the Duchess of Alba. The Spanish royal (and tabloid fixture better known as Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart) is worth between $850 million and $5 billion but she's giving it all away to marry a commoner. Aww.

The Madrid Zoo unveiled a pair of one-month-old panda twins today. They're of unknown gender (apparently it takes awhile to figure that out) and are the first panda twins created by artificial insemination ever to be born outside of Asia.
