A report released yesterday by the White House Council of Economic Advisers offers up an unconventional idea for reducing crime in America: Raise the national minimum wage to $12.

In the 90s, before Hillary Clinton was taking private meetings with Deray McKesson and campaigning on promises to end mass incarceration and reform mandatory minimums, she was a little less enlightened, shall we say, on issues around race and criminal justice. At a speech last night, two Black Lives Matter activists took her to task for it.

Plenty of people agree that America should stop throwing every last shoplifter or weed-smoker in jail. On the right they get to talk about reducing incarceration’s burden on taxpayers; on the left it’s a victory for civil rights. The Wall Street Journal today states that roughly 30 percent of Americans have a criminal record of some sort. We’ve been over this before, but let’s take this opportunity to discuss exactly why the figure is so horrible. The havoc wreaked upon those tens of millions of lives, however, couldn’t be more concrete.
