4 things BusinessWeek won't tell you about its under-30 entrepreneurs

Owen Thomas · 04/18/08 03:00PM

The problem with lists like BusinessWeek's collection of 13 under-30 entrepreneurs: Inevitably, in an effort to fill a demographic quota, editors scrape the bottom of the barrel. And presenting a balanced picture of these business novices cuts against the goal of serving up fresh faces. (Whether they're supposed to make BusinessWeek's 50something readers feel either young again or even older, I'm not quite sure.) Here are some things that BusinessWeek would just as soon you not know about members of its boy band:

NY Sun Editorial Board Connects Two Unrelated News Items And Prays For The Best

Hamilton Nolan · 04/11/08 08:23AM

The New York Sun, the little neocon paper we glance at so you don't have to, has a provocative question: what if Absolut, instead of making ads about Mexico taking over America, made an ad about TIBET? It's as if Matt Sanchez has surreptitiously landed a job on the Sun's editorial board, a scenario which is quite possible. The paper's reasoning, as it were, goes something like this: Tibet is tiny. But the IDEA of Tibet, under the "ice of Communism," is "a vast land extending deep into what is claimed by the Chinese communist party." Also, Tibet has been in the news lately with the Olympic torch protests, and so has Absolut. Makes perfect sense!

Nobody's Sure What Matt Sanchez Is Talking About

Hamilton Nolan · 04/10/08 02:28PM

The editors at Guanabee.com made the mistake of engaging gay porn star-turned-conservative commentator Matt Sanchez in a dialog about his recent war against gay Gawkerdom and other causes. It only takes one answer from Sanchez to prompt the response "We're not really sure what the hell that meant." He then goes on to lie, babble non-sequiturs, and spout right-wing platitudes that he seems to have selected only for their outrageousness. But we're done being outraged by Matt Sanchez; we feel kind of sorry for him now. He could probably use a good therapist. After the jump, the interview's convoluted highlights.

Crap Emails From A Dude: Matt Sanchez Edition

Hamilton Nolan · 04/08/08 03:04PM

You may have had your fill of ex-soldier and gay porn star-turned-conservative blogger and commentator Matt Sanchez yesterday. I certainly did; it took us three posts to explain why he thinks all Gawker contributors are gay, why gay jihadis are threatening the streets of Chelsea, and the intricacies of the Gawker-NYT-Gay Agenda. But while most of you could retire from the subject at will, I couldn't. Matt Sanchez has my email address. And he continued to send me emails—five emails—after I had already shut down for the day. His messages aren't as angry as you might expect. They're just weird, and seem like some sort of public display of willful retardation and self-delusion. It's hard to tell, really. Below, the extra Matt Sanchez emails, from 6:30-10:30 last night. No mas!

The Ignorant Announce Absolut Boycott

Hamilton Nolan · 04/08/08 10:57AM

Global liquor conglomerates, take note: a hastily constructed website is calling for a boycott of Absolut. Run a humorous ad in Mexico and face financial ruin, Pernod Ricard corporation! "Absolut vodka is trying to sell liquor to Mexicans that aspire to control the Southwest United States," reveals boycott organizer William "Yosemite" Gheen. Now if he can only get Matt Sanchez on his side...Despite its insistence on spelling the company's name "Absolute," the website has already attracted more than 120 visits and nearly 7 comments. But its visual and documentary evidence of the brewing Mexican separatist movement that threatens American freedom may be its most powerful tool:

Matt Sanchez Exposes Gawker-NYT-Gay Agenda

Hamilton Nolan · 04/07/08 03:26PM

"The Gawker is the modern day version of Playgirl, a 'straight' publication gay men feel good about buying because they're tired of low quality faggy stuff the pink media puts out." That's former gay porn star and current conservative blogger Matt Sanchez's take, and no facts will get in the way of his analysis! We asked Sanchez, who believes all contributors to Gawker are homosexual, to comment on today's post about all the gays working at the New York Times. And the former Freshmen magazine cover model blows the doors off liberal media lies such as "the Gawker's stance that it is a non-gay website"!

Matt Sanchez In His Own Strange Words

Hamilton Nolan · 04/07/08 12:23PM

We didn't want to just let conservative blogger and gay porn veteran Matt Sanchez's unprovoked gay-cusations against all of Gawkerdom sit out in the blogosphere with no explanation. So we emailed him to get some clarity on his position. His first response to us: "The gawking subtleties of propaganda. The beleaguered gay activist is so sensitive and marginalized, that the only way to feel normal is to call everyone else defective. Can there be any wonder why a social subset with a life expectancy 20 years less than the majority of Americans is so bitterly suicidal?" Ha, WHAT? We didn't give up on understanding his subtle philosophy, though; we pressed him for the basis of his gay obsession. And he sent us not only a new picture of himself (pictured!) but these deeper thoughts on "gay jihadis" like YOU:

Manly Blogger Calls Us Gay!

Hamilton Nolan · 04/07/08 10:16AM

A certain right-wing blogger has a question for us, via email: "Are all of the contributors to Gawker homosexuals, because there's a level of superciliousness that must be directly tied to sexual frustration and the inability to bond with other human beings." Whoa! We'll have him know that Gawker employs a veritable handful of heterosexuals. This guy was ostensibly upset that our coverage of Absolut's pro-Mexico ad (which the company has now apologized for) was not quite xenophobic enough. But what led this Republican internet soldier to target us in our vulnerable gay spot? It's probably his own past as a gay porn star—that does have a tendency to color one's perceptions.

Competitor: YouTube's 2008 revenues will reach maybe $90 million

Nicholas Carlson · 04/02/08 11:40AM

Last summer, VideoEgg CEO Matt Sanchez complained that Google ripped off his company's innovation when YouTube began selling ads that popped up along the bottom margin of videos while they played. Now Sanchez doesn't so much care. YouTube, he told NewTeeVee, is only going to earn revenues of about $70 million to $90 million in 2008. InVideo ads — the kind Sanchez claimed Google ripped off — will be an even smaller part of the pie. Bear Stearns estimated YouTube revenues will reach $103 million this year, $22.6 million from InVideo ads. The low numbers have Sanchez suddenly bearish on online video. He told NewTeeVee that if YouTube can't pull significant revenues, the market definitely isn't big enough for VideoEgg's aspirations. He's steering the company's resources into brokering advertising for casual Flash games instead, a market which is about as underhyped as online video was in 2007.

Former Gay Terrorized By Current Gay

Pareene · 01/21/08 01:05PM

Former gay porn star and current GOP Marine Mascot Matt Sanchez is, apparently, getting "stalked" by a gay fake Marine. To prove that this dangerous Gay is a danger to him, he's put up a YouTube clip of their last phone conversation, in which the "stalker" attempts to set up a date with the strapping, totally-not-gay Sanchez. You see, the stalker taped the call! And then, uh, gave it to Matt so he could put it up on YouTube...? GAY JIHAD AFTER THE JUMP! [Queerty]

GOP Porn Pinup In Panic Over Gay Jihadis!

Choire · 04/02/07 03:11PM

Today, Radar gets with Matt Sanchez, the adult film actor turned adult GOP mascot. (Both careers require someone to have some fingers in him!) It gets really weird. For one:

Remainders: Matt (Dirty!) Sanchez

  • Ann Coulter buddy, former gay porn actor, Marine Corps reservist, and Columbia student Matt Sanchez dissects his university's relationship with the military. [Ed Note: Are we still saying "allegedly" on this one? Anyone? Eh.] [Columbia Spec]

Right-Wing Hero Has Porn Past, Claim Gays

Doree Shafrir · 03/06/07 01:05PM

Matt Sanchez, a 36-year-old Columbia student and Marine Corps reservist, has been appearing on all sorts of conservative talk shows like the O'Reilly Factor and Hannity & Colmes, whining about being mocked for military service by those lefties up at Columbia. And then Sanchez was feted at the CPAC conference— the one where Ann Coulter made her "faggot" remark. That must have been a weird experience, since all the gays have now fingered him as a former gay porn star. (Well, we told you Ann was a huge fag hag!)
