Taken 2 Puts Frankenweenie Down
Louis Peitzman · 10/07/12 02:57PMDo Yourself a Favor and See Dredd 3D Instead of Taken 2
Rich Juzwiak · 10/05/12 10:45AMTaken 2 is where crap becomes unwatchable crap. Its 2008 predecessor was garbage, too, but at least it was well-paced garbage. For a while, Taken 2 is one of those cookie-cutter sequels that goes beat-for-beat with what came before it, a la Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The plot-point repetition alone makes for an over-the-top experience that actually seems to be owning up to its junkiness. It's just too ridiculous.
'90s Icons Tim Burton and Tori Amos Are Chasing Past Glory This Week
Rich Juzwiak · 10/04/12 04:00PMThis week, two relics of ‘90s alternaculture are openly revisiting their pasts with what are essentially reissues of their earlier work. Tori Amos has released Gold Dust, a collection of 14 (or 15, depending on which version you have) songs from her back catalog that she's rerecorded with the Metropole Orchestra. Meanwhile, Tim Burton has converted his pre-Pee Wee's Big Adventure short film Frankenweenie into a full-length stop-motion feature. It's out Friday.
Sinister Is Currently the Best-Reviewed Horror Film of All Time
Rich Juzwiak · 10/02/12 05:05PMSinister, which opens wide on Oct. 12, has a perfect 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this posting. Granted, it's early still, and only 20 reviews are in (notorious horror hater Roger Ebert has yet to weigh in), but the film is inspiring gushing notices. There's no question that Scott Derrickson's film is among the best horror films of the year, but that is faint praise because it's been a really shitty year for the genre.

Louis Peitzman · 09/02/12 02:22PM'Based on a True Story' Is a Rotten Lie I Hope You Never Believe
Cord Jefferson · 08/31/12 03:15PMIt all started on a crowded New York City subway car, where, just above another commuter's sweaty forehead, I caught glimpse of a movie poster through the train window. The movie was called The Possession, and the poster depicted a young woman vomiting dozens of butterflies—or were they moths?—into the heavens above her. Written across the top of the poster was that vague promise so many of Hollywood's biggest films tout nowadays: "Based on a true story."
Chris Matthews and Andrew Breitbart Meet at a Sad Mall
Hamilton Nolan · 08/29/12 04:05PMThe Republican Convention isn't all "inside baseball" and "delegates" and "wandering around inside prison-style fencing in search of meaning." It's also about venturing out to see "the real Tampa." Sometimes, you have to get out of your chair, go "outside the wire," and take in a screening of a haranguing right wing documentary with an unmistakably karmic ending.
