The Trickiest Strip Club in Town

cityfile · 04/29/09 10:19AM

If you're wondering how it is a strip club managed to get Samantha Ronson, Pamela Anderson and Shannen Doherty to turn up for its opening night party on Monday, well, there's a good reason for that. All three now say they were "tricked" into making an appearance at the debut of Sapphire East and had only signed on because they thought Sapphire "was a restaurant or club," and "without realizing there would be topless dancers and bodypainted performers" on the scene. Not that Sam appears too distressed by the sight of a woman in stripper heels doing her thang, of course. [Us]

Eating & Drinking: Tuesday Edition

cityfile · 04/28/09 04:44PM

• Yesterday's Post piece on restaurants charging for things like water and bread and butter provoked a wee bit of controversy. Frank Bruni thinks more restaurants should be charging for bread. And Bobo's Carlos Suarez would like you to know the water fee goes to charity, so simmer down. [NYT, GS]
Sasha Petraske's Dutch Kills may open as soon as this Friday. [UD]
• The Beatrice Inn (which is still closed, FYI) has been vandalized. [Eater]

Spare Your Liver, Still Get Drunk

cityfile · 04/22/09 02:54PM

Sure, getting blind drunk is all that makes life worth living, but continually having to lift the glass, gulp, and swallow? It's all such an effort, right? At long last, the technology to imbibe alcohol simply by breathing is becoming a reality. At an "experimental bar" called Alcoholic Architecture, a booze-infused mist is released into the air by a vapor machine, and to make it even more appealing, "when you breathe, instead of the alcohol going into your liver, it goes right into your bloodstream so breathing is a much quicker way of getting drunk." Sadly, this particular bar is located in London. But who knows, this could very well be the formula to salvaging New York's dying club scene, too. [ABC News]

Dark Days—and Nights—in Clubland

cityfile · 04/14/09 10:08AM

It's never a good sign when a club closes down and no one notices (or cares), nor is it especially encouraging that a venue that once boasted about its long list of celebrity investors is forced to announce the news with a homemade sign taped to the door. It isn't clear why The Plumm closed its doors a few days ago. (Some sort of "legal problem," apparently.) But if it falling off the radar screen a few years ago has led to financial problems, co-owner Noel Ashman might want to take a page from Nikki Beach in Midtown, which seems to have come up with a surefire way to stay alive during the economic downturn: It's now hosting swinger parties for "sexy couples" and single women. Be advised, gentlemen: No leather pants with unbuttoned silk shirts, please.

Eating & Drinking: Monday Edition

cityfile · 04/13/09 03:43PM

Ian Schrager is bringing in some firepower to the Gramercy Park Hotel: Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality will take over space formerly occupied by Wakiya, and David Rockwell will handle the design, although the "Italian-inspired" restaurant doesn't have a chef or name just yet. [NYT]
• In a chat with the Observer, Meyer says he's "intrigued by the possibilities" of working with Schrager. He also says he has no plans to take over the Rainbow Room, and remains undecided about a bid for Tavern on the Green. [NYO]
• Rumor has it Todd English is out at The Libertine at the Gild Hall hotel. [TFB]

Beatrice Inn Gets Padlocked

cityfile · 04/06/09 01:30PM

The Beatrice Inn has been shut down. Why, exactly? It could be due to overcrowding or because it didn't have an adequate number of exits. Or it could have something to do with the $23,000 that owners Paul Sevigny and Matt Abramcyk owe the city for construction violations. Or maybe it's just because it's a den of sin. In any event, Sevigny reports that he's planning a "Free the Beatrice" party at an undisclosed location on Thursday or Friday night. [NYO, BlackBook]
