Not Such a Good Friday Outside the New School

cityfile · 04/10/09 02:11PM

A protest outside the New School turned violent this morning when students seeking the ouster of the university's president, Bob Kerrey, clashed with cops. According to the NYPD, 19 people were arrested in the melee. The department's spokesman, Paul Browne, also said the operation "was done in a very organized, orderly fashion," and the arrests were made in an "orderly fashion," although this video taken by an activist seems to dispute that account. Consider your faith in NYPD flacks shattered! [NYT/City Room]

Feel Free To Hire Hookers Off Craigslist Again

Hamilton Nolan · 03/27/09 09:40AM

Law-abiding citizens, tremble in fear: the NYPD is no longer secretly patrolling the hooker ads on Craigslist. Are we safe without undercover cops trying to lure horny men into motel rooms and arrest them?

Ray Kelly Does Not Keep His Money at TD Bank

cityfile · 03/06/09 01:04PM

TD Bank revealed last week that it planned to continue expanding across the city. One person who isn't so thrilled to see the former Commerce Bank take over NYC: Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who sent off an angry letter to TD management this week because he says the company doesn't do enough to prevent robberies. Case in point: Robbers have hit 11 TD branches so far this year and in one of the more recent incidents, the bandit only managed to successfully rip off TD after he failed at three Chase branches beforehand. Kelly is now demanding the bank install barriers in front of tellers' windows, eye-level cameras, and "countertops designed to leave clear fingerprints." (Creepy!) Also: Holding up banks seems to be turning into a popular recession-time activity: Bank robberies jumped 57% in 2008 and are up 26% through March 1 of this year.

NYPD's Greatest Fear: The Jonas Brothers, Mild Temperatures

cityfile · 12/30/08 01:22PM

Forget protecting the city from terrorist attacks or solving crime. The NYPD's biggest concern these days, at least according to People magazine? "The mob scene that could result when the Jonas Brothers perform in Times Square" on New Year's Eve. The only thing that will save New York's Finest from the utter mayhem? The weather forecast of 17 degrees and a chance of snow and rain. [People]

The NYPD's Gay Vice Squad

cityfile · 10/31/08 06:57AM

Do be careful if you have a habit of visiting sleazy video stores for anonymous, gay sex. It seems the NYPD is cracking down on the practice, possibly by sending in cops to pose as gay men. [Gay City News via EV Grieve]

Every Bad Thing Is Hank Paulson's Fault

Pareene · 10/02/08 03:31PM

Remember the terrible story about the naked mentally ill guy whom the NYPD tasered, causing his death? Yes, well, if you thought that story could not get more awful, you were wrong. The cop who ordered the fatal tasering killed himself this morning. Also, the Times illustrated this story with a photo of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and every joke we could make about that fact is probably in terrible taste. [NYT]

NYPD Kills Dangerous Naked Guy

Pareene · 09/25/08 09:46AM

"COPS IN NUDE TASER SLAY", right? That is the headline of the day! Until you, you know, read the story. And it's about the NYPD killing a mentally ill dude with some tasers. He was armed with a fluorescent light and his nakedness, so he was tasered, and he fell from the second-floor awning he was standing on and landed, face-first, on the street, and was sent to a hospital, where he died. "'This is very out of character,' said the building's superintendent, Charlene Gayle, 31." He meant out of character for the dead, naked guy. Not for the NYPD! There is a video of some of this attached because we're ghouls.

It's Never Been a Better Time to Rob a Bank!

cityfile · 09/11/08 12:15PM

As if banks didn't have enough to worry about thanks to the crumbling economy and recession, it seems rising crime rates in NYC are their fault, too. At least that's what the NYPD says, arguing that the increase in the number of bank robberies—the rate is up 50 percent in New York City this year alone—is because the banks aren't doing enough to protect their own dough. And why would they? They're insured! And if all else fails, there's always the federal government that will come along and bail them out! Oh, and just in case you're hurting for cash and thinking about sticking up a bank, some useful stats to keep in mind: The success rate at Wachovia branches is 100%. In second place, Commerce Bank ("America's Most Convenient Bank"), where robbers made off with the cash 97% of the time. Plus Commerce Bank gives out free cherry lollipops, too, something you might want to take into consideration.

Grab Your Gun, iPhone

Yet another good reason to upgrade your old cell phone: police commissioner Ray Kelly announced today that potential crime stoppers can now send in videos to 911 via their mobile devices. In case the timing of the announcement has confused you, crimes against fashion do not count. Those should continue to be directed to Robert Verdi. [City Room]

NYCLU Takes Aim at NYPD

cityfile · 09/09/08 10:00AM

Back in July, the NYPD revealed that it planned to set up cameras across the city and track every single car that came into town. Based on London's "Ring of Steel" program, the NYPD plan calls for the installation of some 3,000 security cameras, mostly in lower Manhattan. As you might expect, the New York Civil Liberties Union isn't so jazzed about a plan that would allow the city to keep track of you every waking minute of the day. Yesterday the group filed suit against Ray Kelly and the NYPD over the department's refusal to share information about how it actually plans to carry out the program. The full suit after the jump.
