The Daily Show and Colbert Had Cathartic Reactions to Zimmerman Verdict
With The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on hiatus for the last two weeks, many things that desperately needed to be said about current events in this country went tragically unsaid.
But both shows returned last night, raring to unload on everything that's been going on while they were away — chief among them, the George Zimmerman trial.
And it was cathartic to say the least.
On The Daily Show, stand-in John Oliver unleashed Hellfire on Florida, dubbing it "The Worst State" with laws that seem "cut-and-pasted from 1881 Tombstone."
Because let’s be clear here: According to current Florida law, you can get a gun, follow an unarmed minor, call the police, have them explicitly tell you to stop following them, then choose to ignore that, keep following the minor, get into a confrontation with them, and if at any point during that process you get scared, you can shoot the minor to death. And the state of Florida would say 'Well, you did what you could.'
It's a must watch.
Over on The Colbert Report, Stephen took a more "conservative" approach to the news of Zimmerman's acquittal, calling it "victory for the rule of law, in that Florida apparently no longer has rules or laws."
Go ahead and watch that as well.
