The first official trailer for the second American reboot of the Godzilla franchise landed on the Internet's shores today, bringing with it the promise of the first successful homage to Toho's creature feature classic.

Co-written by The Walking Dead's Frank Darabont and directed by Gareth Edwards of Monsters fame (watch it on Netflix right now if you haven't yet!), Legendary Pictures' Godzilla promises "an epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla," which "pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence."

"To me, he’s like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we’ve behaved," Evans was quoted this week as saying. "I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up."

Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Richard T. Jones, and Bryan Cranston, the film — which will be distributed by Toho in Japan — is set to open wide on May 16.
