Trucker Plans to Arrest Lawmakers in What Will Prove to Be a Bad Idea
A trucker group plans to intentionally slow the flow of traffic in the Washington, D.C., beltway's inner loop beginning this Friday in a rally being called "Truckers Ride for the Constitution." Those truckers then plan to march on Congress and put legislators in handcuffs. What could go wrong with this genius scheme?
U.S. News reports that the protest, which is being put together by a Georgia trucker named Earl Conlon and a former country singer named Zeeda Andrews, is an effort to draw attention to "trucker frustrations" like the high cost of diesel fuel and to express displeasure with the federal government. Conlon says the truckers will eventually drive to Congress and attempt to arrest lawmakers he believes have committed treason, including President Obama.
Conlon and Andrews say Obama committed "treason" by allegedly funneling weapons to al-Qaida-linked rebels in Syria. Members of Congress who support arming Syrian rebels, Conlon said, are accessories to the alleged crime. He identified House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., as politicians he will seek to arrest for alleged acts against the Constitution.
Conlon said his plans to storm Congress and arrest members he's deemed treasonous are "nice and peaceful" for the time being, but he seemed to suggest that he's well prepared to use force if necessary. "[I]f they decide to get ugly with us we're going to do what we have to do," he told U.S. News. "If all I get is one or two congressmen walked out of there in handcuffs, that will be a shot across the bow that will ripple across all branches of government. ... I hope they are all civil enough and brave enough to step out onto the congressional steps."
Will congresspeople be "civil enough" to allow a lunatic from Georgia to put them in cuffs and perp walk them around D.C. for the delight of his hayseed friends? Only time will tell, but I'd say there's a better chance of Earl Conlon being beaten very badly by the Washington-area police, who are not the people I'd want to be fucking with nowadays.
