Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was charged with simple battery today for allegedly manhandling Michelle Fields, a reporter for the conservative news outlet Breitbart. One of the criminal attorneys representing him in these matters is a former U.S. Attorney who left office after it became public that he had bitten a dancer at a strip club.

Earlier this month, Fields accused Lewandowski of grabbing her arm hard enough to leave a bruise when she tried to ask Trump a question after a rally. Both Trump and Lewandowski repeatedly denied the allegations, suggesting that Fields was lying.

But surveillance footage released today by the Jupiter Police Department clearly shows Lewandowski grab her arm and pull her away from Trump. Lewandowski reportedly turned himself into the police on Tuesday morning.

According to a statement issued by the Trump campaign, Lewandowski currently has two defense attorneys: Former assistant state’s attorney Scott Richardson and former U.S. Attorney Kendall B. Coffey. Back in 1996, Coffey resigned from his position in the Southern District of Florida after it was revealed that, “despondent” over the loss of a big drug case, he went to a strip club and bit a dancer over a bottle of $900 champagne.

“He bit her, but not like a crazy man,” the woman’s husband told the Sun Sentinel. “But he did break the skin.”

He left the office rather than weather the criticism, friends said at the time, because it was the right thing to do. Via the Sun Sentinel:

Bob Burlington, a Miami lawyer, friend and former law partner of Coffey, said he thought recent media coverage of the stripper incident forced Coffey to resign out of a sense of duty to protect the integrity of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“It is just a damn shame,’’ said Eddie Kay, a defense lawyer in Broward and friend. “He is one of the most decent men that I have ever known.”

The statement issued by the Trump campaign, which declares Lewandowski “absolutely innocent of this charge,” seems to indicate Lewandowski does not intend to resign.
