Ukraine Suspicious Russian Aid Convoy Is a Stealth Military Invasion
Western and Ukrainian officials are wary of a Russian convoy of 280 trucks carrying humanitarian aid en route to southeastern Ukraine. The convoy's lack of official coordination with a neutral agency like the Red Cross has raised concerns that Russia might be using the mission to sneak soldiers into the region to support faltering pro-Russian separatists.
Ukraine has said they will not allow the convoy to enter and has demanded that any crossing be made at a government-held section of the border, the Associated Press reports. Ukrainian presidential aide Valery Chaly also told reporters, "We will not allow any escort by the emergencies ministry of Russia or by the military (onto Ukrainian territory). Everything will be under the control of the Ukrainian side."
The contents of the convoy, as reported by the New York Times:
The convoy was carrying 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid, according to the news agency Itar-Tass. It included 400 tons of cereals, 100 tons of sugar, 62 tons of baby food, 54 tons of medical equipment and medicine, 12,000 sleeping bags and 69 generators of various sizes, the agency reported.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, secretary general of NATO, told the Times that there is a "high probability" that Russia's military will intervene in Ukraine.
