A man with a knife was shot and killed by police in San Francisco on Wednesday, the San Francisco Examiner’s Michael Barba reports on Twitter. Police say he matched the description of a man who had stabbed someone in the area shortly before.

Chief Suhr said that police have video of the shooting, taken by a witness. But they could not confirm whether that video was the same as one uploaded to Instagram on Wednesday evening, which, according to CBS San Francisco, appears to show the scene just before the shooting.

The video appears to show a group of officers pointing their weapons at a man who staggers away from them as they tell him to drop something. He does not drop anything, and, as the camera pulls away, at least a dozen gunshots can be heard.

According to SFPD, today’s officer-involved shooting took place near the intersection of 3rd Street and Gilman Avenue in the Bayview District. The video above seems to have been filmed at this location, which is near that intersection.

Police said they found the man nearby on the 2900 block of Keith Street, holding what appeared to be a six- to eight-inch kitchen knife. Five officers surrounded him at gunpoint and ordered him to drop the knife. An Instagram video apparently taken aboard bus recorded a bystander shouting, “Just drop it” moments before shots rang out.

Police first shot the man with lead-filled beanbag pellets, and he fell but then rose again, Police Chief Greg Suhr told reporters. With the officers surrounding him, Suhr said, the man approached one officer, still holding the knife, and was shot to death at 4:35 p.m.

Suhr said that the suspect “had already demonstrated, by committing a felony aggravated assault, that he was a danger to others, so he could not be allowed to move away from the scene.”
