Storm chaser Scott Sheppard was filming footage of a storm near Fairburn, South Dakota when he was struck by lightning. Watching the clip is an exercise in look-through-the-cracks-of-your-fingers anticipation. Do not be fooled by the rainbow in the video.

The bolt hit Sheppard's arm and traveled through the ground, disabling his car and another car driving by. According to the CDC, 100 people are killed by lightning every year in the U.S.; 90 percent of victims, like Sheppard, survive.
