Woman Busted by Airport Security with Cocaine-Stuffed Pumpkins
Border officials at Montreal's Trudeau International Airport had themselves a particularly happy Halloween after busting a passenger with four-and-a-half pounds of cocaine stuffed inside three pumpkins.
Airport officials say custom agents suspected the pumpkins might be Jack-Coke-Lanterns when they noticed they were heavier than normal for pumpkins of that size.
A scan of the gourds confirmed their suspicions.
The passenger, 26-year-old Mercedes Jerez Farias of Montreal, was subsequently arrested and charged with importing drugs and drug possession.
If convicted, she is expected to serve a minimum of two years behind bars.
According to a statement by the Canada Border Services Agency, this was Trudeau's 173rd drug bust since the start of 2013. All told, nearly 100 pounds of cocaine have been seized so far, among other drugs.
