Varspeak To English: The WGA's Failed Plans
From Variety's "Inside Move" analysis of the DGA's contract agreement with the movie studios and television networks and its impact on the WGA, the filthiest thing you are likely to read today:
DGA leaders noted that it was more important to prop up the Guild health plan than it was to increase homevideo residuals...Scribe tribe leaders decided to walk away in hopes that the DGA would be able to ease the studios' rock-hard resistance on DVD.
For those of you functionally illiterate in Varspeak, the playfully indecipherable patois of Variety, allow us to translate: "Leaders of the Directors Guild of America prioritized their health coverage over the sticky issue of increased DVD residuals in their negotiations with the studios. Leaders of the Writers Guild of America hoped to model their negotiations on those conducted by the DGA, but this plan backfired when the DGA took care of their own, more pressing problems, leaving writers to be bent over a log and helplessly sodomized by the 'rock-hard' tactics of the studios when they return to the bargaining table."
