The New York Press may be hogging all the alt-weekly crisis news this week, but it looks like old man Village Voice might be having a little shake-up of its own soon.

Opponents of newspaper consolidation including me are starting to worry about the flurry of rumors and unconfirmed reports that there's some sort of merger in the making between the nation's two largest alternative newspaper chains.

The concern may be premature: Nobody at New Times, which owns 11 papers, including SF Weekly, or Village Voice Media, which owns six, would so much as hint that a deal is under consideration. Most of what I've heard about this is barely above the level of gossip and speculation.

Well, gossip and speculation will suffice — the rumor mill needs grist! I want every single person in New York employed by a media company fearing for their jobs by the end of my guest-editorship!

I got a tip saying Conde Nast will be firing everyone with an odd number of letters in their name next week! We hear Newsday's laying off anyone shorter than 5'10"! Sources tell me that the New York Sun has been sold to the Emir of Qatar! Panic in the streets, you leeches! -AP
