LA Times Corrects Record On Courtney Love's Destructive Behavior
The LAT corrects some of the details of its Saturday story about Courtney Love's latest court-ordered smackdown, in which an exasperated judge sentenced her to yet another stint in rehab. Love's troubled backstory proves pretty tricky:
FOR THE RECORD
Courtney Love — An article in Saturday's California section about musician Courtney Love incorrectly reported that Love was arrested in October 2003 for forcing her way into the home of her former manager and boyfriend and attacking a female musician sleeping there. The article also reported incorrectly that on the same date, police arrived to find Love in the street, that she tested positive for cocaine and opiates, and that paramedics went to her Beverly Hills home, where she was treated for what appeared to be a painkiller overdose.
The correct version of events is as follows:
In October 2003, Love was arrested at the home of her former manager after an alleged break-in. She tested positive for cocaine and opiates. Hours later, paramedics were called to Love's house, where she was treated for an apparent painkiller overdose.
In April 2004, Love was accused of throwing a bottle at a woman she reportedly found asleep on the couch of her former boyfriend and manager. Authorities filed charges against Love several months after the incident — police were not called to the home — and Love ultimately pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
Got that? We had to read it a couple of times to keep things straight, but here's the short version: Instead of concentrating all of that manager-stalking, bottle-tossing, and overdosing action into a single bender/meltdown, Love actually distributed the crazy over two discrete events months apart. It's an important distinction; her lawyers don't want Love to be perceived as some kind of nutter flash-in-the-pan. She's got the staying power of batshit-insane legend.
