Word 'Madonna' Means Something Completely Different In Malawi
Madonna's ongoing "Confessions That Justify My Ambition To Keep My Baby Tour" of our nation's media outlets stops today at the AP, where she tells an amusing anecdote about a comedy of errors that came out of the Malawians having their own definition of the word "madonna":
"People started to say my name and they had never heard of Madonna," the 48-year-old singer, talking about her recent visit to Malawi, told AP Television in an interview Tuesday.
"And, in Chichewa, the word `madonna' means `distinguished white lady,' so I think they got very confused."
The confusion was quickly cleared up when interpreters explained to the singer that while her Christian name may be Madonna, the locals would have to be excused if they were overheard referring to their visitor as "dita," a term which translates roughly as "white lady with clearly put-on earsore of a faux-distinguished, fake-British accent who is way too old to still be shamelessly courting the youth demographic in various Jean-Paul-Gaultier-designed whore-ensembles."
