Reports indicate Google is experimenting with Digg-like features for its search results pages. According to a Google help page, the trial feature lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. Google's been slow to implement social search functions like this, and for at least two good reasons, we think.

First of all, with click fraud and shady search-engine "optimizers," Google already has to dedicate too many resources to fighting schemes to game its search results. Allowing users to vote on which result should go to the top just invites more funny business.

But the real reason this implementation won't work? Google wants to provide useful information. Digg-like voting is not going to bring anything remotely helpful to the top of the pile. Looking for the Latin name for the red-winged parakeet? Too bad. Here's the world's smartest bird instead. Innithecute?
