Columbia University has long considered itself to be at the forefront of student activism, so we're sure they are very proud of themselves for allowing boys—sorry, men—at their Take Back the Night march for the first time tonight. Take Back the Night is a march against violence against women, and this reminded me of the time back in college when I reported on the mens' group "Men Against Violence Against Women," accidentally calling it "Men Against Women Against Violence." The typo ran the next day, and women and men alike were in an uproar. Whoops. [Columbia Spectator]

Did you by any chance ever run into one of my all time favorite nabe people, Sam from 114th St? He would be 75 if still alive. Japanese, shock of striking white hair, worked at the RSP tennis courts and was a famous hang-around the Heights guy. He'd spend every day from like 4pm to midnight at the Marlin next to the Koronet and was an absolute sweetheart. Used to have this schtick about having been "the only kamikaze pilot to fly twenty-nine missions." He'd call out "twenty-nine missions" and toast himself in the backbar mirror and would buy drinks for everyone. Sweetheart.

@the supergoddess: I never got kicked out because I was chummy with Barney Cannon and one of my friends was the local numbers chief and packed a 9mm. My main place was the Marlin at 110th and B'way (NE side). It was next to what became the elephant ear pizza joint. (Colosseum Pizza?) and I think now is a Mailboxes Etc or one of those. Neighborhood dive.

@MyCubeHas3Sides: No, I got it. I just think the difference between marching in the parade and walking next to it are, um, so negligible as to be silly. But "silly" is a pretty apt descriptor of a lot of college-girl activism.

@Ed: Right, $2 and one slice amounts to a whole meal. Maybe the price has gone up, but whatever.

I've seen the condo. My regular doc is down 110th st and I go there for my annual.

BTW, he lives on 108th and goes to Cannon's.
