Wendi Deng's 40th birthday party took place last night at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Pianist Lang Lang performed, and Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Billy Joel, Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg supposedly made appearances. One person who wasn't there: Rupert's 99-year-old mother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, who doesn't appear to be the biggest fan of her daughter-in-law. In an interview with The Age over the weekend, she described her reaction to the news that her son was planning to split up with his second wife:

"'Rupert, you're going to be terribly lonely and what will happen is the first designing woman will come along and will snap you up.' He said, 'Don't be ridiculous, Mum, I'm too old for that', but that's exactly what happened."

Rupert Murdoch: luxuriously uxorious [Sydney Morning Herald]
Correction: Originally, we said the party was taking place tonight since that's what the Sydney Morning Herald indicated, but apparently it took place last night (and Michael Wolff's party for his new Murdoch biography was moved to tonight so as to not conflict). Confusing!
