The Battle for Ted Kennedy's Senate Seat
Just when you think there can be no more analysis of healthcare reforms, an unexpectedly close Senate election comes up in Massachusetts and off we go again. Haiti and yesterday's attack in Kabul also dominate.
With the fill-Ted-Kennedy's-seat pre-amble, election day drama and post-election analysis, we're probably set to agonize over polls and votes and political machinations for the rest of the week. If the opinions of anonymous government aides — who are bound to be quoted — do not fill you with excitement, here's what else is going on:
- The New York Times lead with a report by Dexter Filkins out Kabul. But you should read his amazing blog post from yesterday on the topic instead.
- The Washington Post have an investigation into illicit phone records grabbing by the FBI.
- And the Wall Street Journal look at the potential purchase of Cadbury by Kraft.
Disclosure: I freelance write and report for newspapers that are included in this roundup. Where there is a direct conflict of interest I will make it clear.
The New York Times: has a great story by Dexter Filkins from Afghanistan, that is still not as great as this incredible blog post he wrote yesterday on the same attack in Kabul. Coverage of Haiti continues, with one story on the Red Cross receiving $22m in text message donations, and another on burying the dead. There's are also pieces on Democrat options for the healthcare bill if the Republican wins in Massachusetts, the death penalty in Connecticut and an orchestra strike in Cleveland.
The Washington Post: have an investigation into privacy abuses by the FBI, who have been sneakily obtaining phone records. There are two stories on Haiti, here and here and a look at the Massachusetts election and healthcare reform. Obama's first year in charge also merits some analysis.
The LA Times: also covers Haiti, the attack in Kabul and the potential chicanery over the healthcare bill. They spice things up with a story about new rules on waiting times to see doctors in CA, and a profile of the new director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Jeffrey Deitch.
The Wall Street Journal: likes chocolate — they lead with the news that Kraft is set to buy Cadbury. There are also pieces on Haiti and Massachusetts, a look at Federal Housing Administration mortgages and the dangers of electric bikes in China.
The New York Post: has the best Massachusetts headline of the whole story.
The Daily News: is still leading with the Jets.
Boston Herald: nice try with the Mass pun. But the Post still win.
Winnipeg Sun (Canada): ah, the good old real-life Fight Club story. We thought there was some rule about not talking about Fight Club...
