Michael Musto's 25th Anniversary Bash Was a Village Voice Column Come to Life
Every drag queen, club kid, and homosexual in New York (and in the media) came out to celebrate the silver anniversary of the downtown chronicler extraordinaire. It was like Area all over again!
Held at the 230 Fifth event space, which Musto accurately described as "Battlestar Galactica meets The Love Boat," both floors were packed with the fierce, fabulous, and fashionable, though they were a little confused that they were getting together at 8:30pm instead of 1:30am, but the open bar kept everyone happy. We ran into Musto himself near the end of the party, and he seemed honored by the great turn out, but exhausted from having to talk to every. There was a little show hosted by Joan Rivers and Ugly Betty's Michael Urie and emceed by drag king Murray Hill. After watching the guest of honor give burlesque girl Dirty Martini a motorboat on stage, we retired to the second floor to see who else was there.
Ben Widdicombe, done with TMZ and back in New York for good (for now), gave us a chat, but we politely avoided writer Mike Albo because of, well, this and we were a little afraid what he might have to say. NY Times theater critic Charles Isherwood held court and NY Observer theater critic Jesse Oxfeld brushed past us on the stairs. Fictional freelancer Betsey Morgenstern was passed out on the banquette murmuring something about losing her thong. People's David Caplan was our +1 arm candy for the night, and was very patient as we talked to every working drag queen in the city. We both heard that Countess Crackerjacks Luann was there, but didn't see her. Alas.
What else did you miss?
