Today, Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton urged theaters to offer healthier snack options to moviegoers. All that butter-laced popcorn and candy is making our children fat. Why would theaters even think of serving up such garbage in the first place?

Probably has something to do with the fact that movie theater popcorn yields profits of 90 cents on the dollar. In a supremely underminey move, Lynton told theater operators at a Vegas convention tonight:

Adding healthier options to your existing menu is the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country.

Seriously, movie theater operators, stop foisting on consumers worthless but hugely profitable garbage at the expense of the public good. Follow Sony Pictures' own example, which on March 19th will release Bounty Hunter starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Pretty sure it's a hard-hitting six-hour documentary on inequality in America's school systems or something?
