Comedian David Schwimmer Made a Very Serious Movie About Internet Sex Predators
Trust, the latest movie from Friends star David Schwimmer, is like the dramatic equivalent of watching a "To Catch a Predator" segment on Dateline, but with Clive Owen instead of Chris Hansen. This thing sure looks like a turkey.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like Schwimmer should be stuck making comedies (like his last film Run Fatboy Run) for the rest of his life. But this thing just has a movie-of-the week hokiness that's not very appealing. Clive Owen, as the father of a girl who is abused by a man who poses as a teenager on the internet, seems to ham it up and turn the movie into some sort of who-done-it thriller rather than emotional exploration of the aftermath of a sexual crime (which actually sounds kind of interesting). We're sure Catherine Keener, as the girl's mother, is as great as ever, but her considerable talents are probably wasted in this Lifetime movie treatment that will make its debut at the Toronto Film Festival thanks to its director's famous name. Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt? As far as Friends alums go, nothing can be worse than Jennifer Aniston's The Bounty Hunter.
