People are reporting their bank and PayPal accounts have been emptied by hackers via the iTunes Store. This has not been a good summer for Apple's self-made image of safety and security.

If you've got an iTunes account linked to a PayPal account, you should be on guard; users with that setup are reporting mass purchases of software, videos and music through the iTunes Store. At least one person has reported everthing was drained from his bank account, according to a report in TechCrunch, with others hit to the tun of $500 and $1,000. Another victim wrote in to the San Jose Mercury News — where the advice columnist said his account was hacked, too. It's not clear how much of this is due to security breaches on Apple servers versus other ways hackers might have gotten at iTunes passwords, but following the exposure of iPad customer data in June and the hacking of some iTunes accounts in July, Apple might want to increase the number of different ways it "has you covered" against hackers.
