Kanye West: Interrupting Taylor Swift Was Like Bush Ignoring Hurricane Katrina
George W. Bush said recently that the "worst" moment of his presidency was when Kanye West said he didn't care about black people. Now Kanye has kinda apologized to Bush for calling him racist... in typical Kanye West fashion.
Speaking to Houston radio station 97.9, Kanye responded to Bush's suggestion that Kanye's outburst during a live Red Cross telethon was the "all-time low" of his presidency. Kanye wants everyone to know he went through the exact same thing after interrupting Taylor Swift's 2009 VMA speech!
I definitely can understand the way he feels, to be accused of being a racist in any way, because the same thing happened to me, you know, I got accused of being a racist. For both situations, it was basically a lack of compassion that America saw in that situation.
With him, it was a lack of compassion of him not rushing, him not taking the time to rush down to New Orleans. For me, it was a lack of compassion of cutting someone off in their moment. But nonetheless, I think we're all quick to pull a race card in America. And now I'm more open, and the poetic justice that I feel, to have went through the same thing that he went [through]-and now I really more connect with him on just a humanitarian level."
(Emphasis ours.)
Because drunkenly interrupting an MTV awards show and ignoring a dying city as President is pretty much the same thing? It's like Kanye West's shutter shades filter the broad spectrum of reality, all the tragedies of the world and all its triumphs, to a narrow band ranging from "me," to "I".
Maybe Bush and Kanye should do a song together about how fucking over New Orleans and interrupting Taylor Swift, respectively, has made each understand the other's absurdly outsized ego: Kanye West (ft. George W. Bush) - "The Worst Thing to Ever Happen In the World Is that People Thought I Was Racist One Time." [E!]
