Colombian special forces infiltrated territory occupied by FARC rebels and installed Christmas lights on an 82-foot high tree. They hope that this will encourage them to surrender. Except the Jewish FARC rebels, I guess?

From the BBC:

"Operation Christmas," as it was code named, was carried out by elite troops using Blackhawk helicopters.

The Christmas tree was installed near a rebel supply route in the region where the Farc military leader, Mono Jojoy, was killed in a large-scale military assault in September.

As well as lights, it was decorated with slogans saying "Demobilize, at Christmas everything is possible" and "If Christmas can come to the jungle, you can come home".

It's good that somewhere people are keeping the true meaning of Christmas alive. So much of it today is about buying this year's big gizmo, but maybe we should all just slow down and take a second this holiday season to surrender to someone close to us.
