The Congressional Revolution Will Be Televised (on Facebook)
The new Republican House majority will be sworn in tomorrow, the start of the 112th Congress. Have you bought a dress yet? You'll want to look good as you watch tomorrow's events on John Boehner's Facebook, from your cubicle.
The Washington Post has put together a basic schedule of tomorrow's events, which will include lots of swearing-in and praying and pledging and so on:
9 a.m. — Bipartisan prayer service, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Washington.
12 p.m. — House Clerk calls the House to order, followed by a prayer, the pledge of allegiance and a quorum call. Nominations for speaker are then made.
Approx. 12:40 p.m. — Members of Congress elect the new House speaker.
Approx. 1:40 p.m. — Outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) addresses the House and presents the new speaker, John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Boehner addresses the House.
The dean of the House administers the oath of office to Speaker-elect Boehner.
Boehner swears in members of the 112th Congress.
2:30 p.m. — Members of the House will take up consideration of the new Rules package on the floor. Meanwhile, Boehner holds a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony with the members of the 112th Congress (Rayburn Room, H-207, U.S. Capitol).
So we should be at war with Iran by 5:00, depending on traffic.
The afternoon ceremonies will all be broadcast on Facebook, courtesy of John Boehner. Do you have a Facebook? Then you can watch all the prayers and shit right here. And what if they read dumb prayers that you don't like? John Boehner will let you type nonsense about this, too:
Those watching on Facebook will be able to offer feedback and comment on the proceedings as they happen live.
(There's also, uh, CSPAN, as usual.)
Get a good night's sleep, everyone! It will be your last.
