Feds Still Looking for 'the 9/11 Gang That Got Away'
According to a new Wikileaks document released to The Telegraph, the FBI is still looking for at least four men it believes were connected with the 9/11 attacks—and who may have even been intended participants.
Three of the men are Qatari nationals who, the FBI says, "carried out surveillance" on the World Trade Center, the White House and the Pentagon after flying in to the U.S. from London in August 2001. (The fourth guy, a UAE citizen named Mohamed Al Mansoori, was apparently their contact in the U.S.) They then headed out to L.A., where they booked a hotel room near the airport.
It's not really clear what they were up to, but hotel staff reported seeing pilots' uniforms and "computer print outs detailing pilot names, flight numbers and times and packages addressed to Syria, Afghanistan, Jerusalem and Jordan." (Feel free to write up some suspected terrorist slash/fic, obviously.)
The trio had tickets for a Sept. 10 flight from Los Angeles to Washington, but never showed. (The next day, the same flight was hijacked on its return trip and crashed into the Pentagon.) The FBI hasn't said whether it thinks they chickened out or if something else went wrong, but they traveled back to London instead and from there back to Doha, Qatar.
