Following the apparent death of Libyan dictator Mommar Qaddafi's son Saif al-Arab in an NATO airstrike on Saturday, Western embassies and diplomatic missions were reportedly attacked in Tripoli by pro-Qaddafi forces.

It's unclear whether the attacks, which targeted U.K. and Italian diplomatic residences and embassies, as well as U.N. buildings, were carried out by civilian mobs or by Libyan governmental forces. The attacks are, regardless, "symbolic," insofar as the buildings targeted were empty—British and Italian diplomats have already vacated Tripoli. Even so, the British Foreign Office has kicked out Libyan ambassador Omar Jelban and condemned the attacks as violations of the Vienna convention.
