June 26, James C. Anderson, a 46 year-old auto worker and a black man, was standing in a Jackson, Mississippi motel parking lot. Then, police say, a car full of teenagers pulled up. They beat Anderson. Then ran him over.

The video above, from CNN, shows security camera footage of some of the incident. Its emergence has catapulted the crime into the national spotlight. But really, the bare facts of the case are more than enough to hold your attention. Daryl Dedmon, the 18 year-old driver of the pickup truck that ran over Anderson, has been charged with murder. Here is the district attorney's account of what happened, from CNN:

As the teens were partying and drinking miles away from Jackson that night, in largely white Rankin County, Dedmon told friends they should leave, saying "let's go fuck with some niggers," according to law enforcement officials...

Shortly after he allegedly drove the truck over Anderson, Dedmon allegedly boasted and laughed about the killing, according to testimony given by some of the teens to detectives.

"I ran that nigger over," Dedmon allegedly said in a phone conversation to the teens in the other car.

The case goes to a grand jury later this month. Mississippi, goddam.
