On last night's episode of NBC's enfeebled, Broadway-adoring show Smash, Uma Thurman dropped by to give the show within a show some star power. I suppose her presence was to benefit Smash itself, but didn't work, as the episode brought Smash to a series low in ratings. Poor Uma. Slumming it on TV in TV's actual slums.

The show's struggle is not much of a mystery — it's the picture of cluelessness. Thurman's character, Rebecca Duvall, came on the show tone-deaf and terrible, but the rehearsal/fantasy staging you see above happened at the end of the episode and is supposed to be an improvement (and a possible future direction for the show within a show). The thing is that she's still tone-deaf and terrible. So at least people can enjoy the show's lack of awareness?
