Teen heartthrob Mick Jagger will host and serve as musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live, on May 19, it was announced Thursday.

Last month, rumors began circulating that Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney might snag the season finale hosting gig, after columnist Maureen Dowd mentioned in a New York Times column that producer Lorne Michaels had offered him "a guest spot" (which, to be clear, would likely have amounted to just a brief cameo).

Michaels stated in a conference call yesterday that Romney's schedule was too full to permit an appearance.

If you can't get Mitt Romney, though, Mick Jagger is the next logical choice.

Jagger has performed on SNL twice before as a musical guest. He also appeared as himself in a 2001 skit opposite Jimmy Fallon, who was also playing Mick Jagger.

By far the best thing to come out of the hosting announcement has been UK newspapers' descriptions of what, exactly, the Rolling Stones frontman will be doing.

Here's how Nick Allen of The Telegraph explained it:

…Jagger, 68, will join usual cast members performing jokes, some of which will undoubtedly be at his own expense.

Allen also noted that Jagger "will perform a humorous opening monologue," though this, frankly, seems a little ambitious, then threw in this detail for no reason other than to pad his article, much as I am doing now:

The record number of hosting appearances by a celebrity is held by actor Alec Baldwin with 16.

How about that.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning will host the show this Saturday, accompanied by musical guest Rihanna. SNL alum Will Ferrell and musical guest Usher are lined up for the May 12 episode.
