On next week's Billboard Hot 100, dated June 23, Carly Rae Jepsen's diabolical ear candy "Call Me Maybe" at last assumes the No. 1 position. The song was practically preordained as the song of the summer, and wouldn't you know, it happens hit No. 1 on the first chart of summer proper. Everything is going according to the universe's plan.

"Maybe," which has sold over 3 million copies in 16 weeks, ousts Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" from the top spot after eight weeks. This marks back-to-back viral sensations being deemed the biggest songs in the country by a somewhat antiquated institution that is, nonetheless, still the best barometer we have for musical popularity. Real life continues to catch up to the Internet. That is, of course, if you consider the Billboard charts real life.

Even more than "Somebody," which at least had some international success to roll into domestic ubiquity, "Maybe" is an Internet baby of meme proportions. And now your mom likes it because moms need memes too.
