You Know Who The Highest-Paid TV Actress Was Last Year? Sofia Vergara.
On Wednesday, Forbes released its annual list of the 20 top-earning TV actresses. Modern Family's Sofia Vergara came in first. Who knew, right? Good for her.
Here are the top 10 (there was a three-way tie for 8th place):
1. Sofia Vergara: $19M
2. Kim Kardashian: $18M
3. Eva Longoria: $15M
4. Bethenny Frankel: $12M
5. Khloe Kardashian Odom: $11M
6. Tina Fey: $11M
7. Mariska Hargitay: $10M
8. Zooey Deschanel, Felicity Huffman, Ellen Pompeo: $9M
Vergara just barely edged out noted Kardashian Kim Kardashian to claim the number one spot. According to Forbes' mysterious calculations (which take into account "upfront pay, residuals, endorsements and advertising work," but not, thankfully "social media buzz"), Kardashian pulled in just $1M less than Vergara, earning $18M to her $19M.
However, while everyone is probably really happy for Sofia Vergara because you go girl, the notion that Kim Kardashian somehow acquired $18M dollars will send many into fits of apoplectic rage. (It's also possible the women's actual earnings were even closer than that, but that Forbes realized a magazine with Kim Kardashian on the cover could be mistaken for pretty much any other magazine.)
Vergara's main sources of income were her Kmart clothing line (which came with a $7M advance) and endorsement deals. She shills for Cover Girl and Diet Pepsi in English and Burger King and State Farm en Español. Comcast XFinity in both. She also owns half of a managing and marketing firm called Latin World Entertainment, which she co-founded in 1998.
The bulk of Kardashian's money came from that one time when she got married; her E! wedding special reportedly earned her $10M.
The rest of the top earners list includes women you see on television but, with the possible exceptions of Zooey Deschanel (#8) and Tina Fey (#6), almost certainly would not think to name if asked to come up with a list of women who appear on television.
For example: Mariska Hargitay, who earns $400,000 an episode for her work as an underpaid detective in the NYPD Special Victims Unit. Forbes reports that, because USA is basically one constantly running SVU marathon, Hargitay also pulls in "an unrivaled" residuals check.
Congratulations to all the rich ladies who make our empty apartments seem less (or maybe more) empty with their tireless pursuit of the televisionary arts.
