Killer in Jennifer Hudson Family Slayings Sentenced to Life in Prison and Then Some
William Balfour, the man who murdered Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother, and 7-year-old nephew Julian, was given three life sentences for his crimes. He was found guilty back in May.
In addition to his three consecutive life terms, Balfour received another 120 years for aggravated kidnapping and home invasion. Suffice it to say, he's not getting out ever.
Before the sentencing, Cook County Judge Charles Patrick Burns condemned Balfour with some damn fine poetic language.
You have the heart of an arctic night. Your soul is as barren as dark space.
That's powerful stuff. You've got to wonder if this guy writes free verse in his spare time.
Jennifer Hudson was in court throughout the sentencing, frequently wiping tears from her eyes. She left without making a statement. Hudson was the first witness in the trial.
In a final statement before sentencing, Balfour again proclaimed his innocence, offered condolences, and said, "I still do love [Julian]." To which the great Judge Burns responded, "To tell us in open court that you loved that child is an insult to all of us."
Balfour's attorneys will be appealing his sentence.
