FBI, Capitol Police Investigating Threats of Rape Against Todd Akin and His Family
A spokesman for Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) told the Associated Press yesterday that multiple threats have been made against the congressman, his family, and his staff since he made his controversial "legitimate rape" comments on Sunday.
"Over the last couple of days, there's been threats of rape of staff, the congressman's family, and suggestions that people die," Steve Taylor is quoted as saying.
The FBI and U.S. Capitol Police are reportedly investigating the threats to determine which "are accurate or how to contextualize them." A Capitol Police spokeswoman would not provide specifics on the threats made, nor would the spokesman say if Akin's security had been beefed up.
The lawmaker, who angered many on both sides of the aisle when he claimed that women who are victims of "legitimate rape" cannot get pregnant, is said to be "huddling with top conservative activists in Tampa," where the Republican National Convention is set to take place next week.
