Community's truncated fourth season was supposed to premiere tonight on NBC, but instead the show has been shelved indefinitely.

The network released a statement saying it would be holding on to Community until airtime opened up earlier in the week.

But after NBC announced it was cancelling Animal Practice — the show it decapitated the Olympics finale to preview — and called in Whitney to fill the slot, fans of Community had just about given up on ever getting another glimpse of their beloved sitcom.

Happily, it was not to be, as NBC today released a new season 4 promo that, while still frustratingly low on premiere details, more than makes up for it with merciless mocking of network execs for giving fans the runaround.

Laugh, laugh — for tomorrow we cry.
