Last week, voters in Maryland, Maine and Washington state voted for marriage equality and the gays rejoiced! After all, this was the first time that gay marriage had been approved by popular vote. But just like at the end of The Avengers, there's another villan hiding in a distant galaxy, in this case, it's Europe.

The Vatican is not happy about what's going on in the U.S. at all. Father Federico Lombardi was on Vatican Radio yesterday and made an impassioned speech against all of the progress that America has made and what all of this is doing to heterosexual marriage, which he described as "an achievement of civilization."

"It is clear that in Western countries there is a widespread tendency to modify the classic vision of marriage between a man and woman," he said. "Or rather to try to give it up, erasing its specific and privileged legal recognition compared to other forms of union."

He went on to say, "If not, why not contemplate also freely chosen polygamy and, of course, not to discriminate, polyandry?" You've got to just love Father Lombardi bringing up polyandry, when a woman has more than one husband. The only time that Catholic Church has thought of women's rights as a real thing in the past year is when it's giving out a hypothetical situation to stifle gay marriage. Nice.
