For the First Time in Recent Memory, Not One Person in NYC was Shot, Stabbed, or Slashed for an Entire Day
New York City was damn-near Utopian earlier this week when not one report of a shooting, stabbing, or slashing was recorded in any of the five boroughs for just over 36 hours.
From 10:25 PM on Sunday until 11:20 AM on Tuesday when a 27-year-old was shot in Brooklyn, NYC was completely free of the most serious violent crimes.
"Nice way to start the week," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told the New York Daily News, adding that he couldn't remember when such an event last occurred.
None of the other officials reached for comment by the Daily News could remember either.
Though crime as a whole is up 3% for the year, the rise is attributed to a 9% increase in grand larcenies. Murders are down 23%, and shootings are down 10%.
In fact, the city is on track to end the year with "the fewest number of murders since about 1960," according to NYPD historian Tom Reppetto.
For the record, there was one shooting on Monday: A 16-year-old Bronx resident accidentally shot himself in the thigh notes the Associated Press.
