Like, Whitney Cummings, Like, Interviewed Mindy Kaling on, Like, Her New Talk Show

Whitney Cummings' new E! talk show, Love You, Mean It, debuted last night and her first guest was Mindy Kaling. They gnawed the air at each other, swapped compliments and said "like" collectively over 40 times. I strung together all of the latter instances for the reel above. Many of us are guilty of this, myself included. Every time I catch myself doing this, I grind my teeth and one day soon I won't have any teeth and pronouncing a word like "like" will approach impossibility. I'm just saying, like, let's all be more aware of it.
Love You, is clearly a work in progress. Cummings is quick on her feet and can read a teleprompter sometimes without looking like she is. The premiere featured fellow comedians such as John Mulaney, Casey Wilson and Cummings' comely sidekick Julian McCullough, and it sometimes behaved more like a pissing contest where the piss was hilarity: lots of riffing and attempted out-funnying. In that respect, it authentically telegraphed what it's like to hang out with a pack of comedians. It moves quickly, there are lots of franchise gags (including Unsubscribe, which is Cummings' quippy rundown of her grievances, sort of a social-media savvy riff on Chief Keef's "I Don't Like," but less funny). But it's a weekly talk show, so proving itself relevant will pose a challenge — a lot of the discussion about current events seemed stale. They for example, showed a clip reel from Oprah's Favorite Things 2012, which premiered over a week ago. Granted, that OWN special is a gift that is destined to keep on giving, but whether Love You is as well remains to be seen.
