Angry Mob Buries Accused Murderer Alive in Grave of Alleged Victim
Scores of angry mourners seized a teen accused by police of raping and murdering a 35-year-old woman, and proceeded to bury him alive alongside his alleged victim.
The brutal lynching took place Wednesday night in the Bolivian town of Colquechaca, where 200 people gathered to lay Leandra Arias Janco to rest.
It is unclear how residents got hold of 17-year-old Santos Ramos, but a local reporter told the Associated Press he was tied up, beaten, and then tossed into an open grave.
The mob then placed the victim's coffin on top of Ramos, and filled the grave with dirt.
Meanwhile, other residents of the municipality were actively blocking police and prosecutors from reaching the scene.
So-called "indigenous justice" is reportedly common in Bolivia, and even has partial backing from Evo Morales, the country's first democratically elected indigenous president.
