Clinton Correctional Officer Placed on Leave Amid Escape Investigation
A corrections officer at Clinton Correctional Facility has been put on administrative leave in connection with an investigation into the escape two weeks ago of inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat, the New York Times reports.
Later on Friday, New York State Police revealed that two men matching descriptions of the escaped prisoners had been seen a week ago near a rail yard in the town Erwin, N.Y.—over three hundred miles from Clinton Correctional. The next day, two men with the same description were seen in Lindley, N.Y., heading on foot towards the Pennsylvania border.
The Wall Street Journal reports that State Police obtained video footage of two men who appear to be the escaped inmates. “They are someplace,” David N. Favro, the Clinton County sheriff, said. “We will definitely find them.”
According to the Times, the investigation at the prison is focussing on as many as four officers “who either had switched their posts in the months before the escape or had often been seen at night around the cellblock where the two men were housed.” Investigators are examining the officers’ bank and phone records.
Joyce Mitchell, a civilian employee of the prison, was arrested last week for allegedly helping Matt and Sweat escape. Apparently, she wanted them to kill her husband.
