Concert Stampede Kills 33 in Guinea
After a rap concert on the beach in Conakry, Guinea ended Tuesday night, at least 33 people were reported dead after a stampede occurred. Over 700 people had attended the concert and were asked to leave through a single gated exit.
The Associated Press reports that bodies were brought to the nearby Donka Hospital, where hospital workers struggled to handle the intake. The president of Guinea, Alpha Conde, announced a national week of mourning and closed all beaches in the capital "until further notice."
The victims included children as young as 10, and most bodies brought to an overflowing morgue in the capital were still dressed in bathing suits and swim trunks. Some had bled from their mouths after their small bodies were trampled, causing internal bleeding.
The concert had been a celebration of the end of Ramadan and featured rap artists Instinct Killers and Banlieuzart.
