Germany Caught Spying on Israeli Prime Minister's Office
Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service has been spying on Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office for years, according to the German newspaper Der Spiegel.
The report notes that the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn’t the only target—the interior ministries of Austria and Belgium, the UK Defense Ministry, the headquarters of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and International Monetary Fund, the U.S. Air Force and NASA were all mentioned, too.
Last Der Spiegel reported the intelligence agency was monitoring communication devices used by staffers at the embassies and consulates of the U.S., UK, France, Sweden, Spain and others. It even go caught spying on the Vatican and the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who once declared that “spying among friends, that’s just wrong” after reports surfaced that the U.S. National Security Agency had tapped her own phone, has not yet commented.
