South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is already calling for the death penalty in the Charleston church shooting case. She said this morning that if alleged shooter Dylann Roof is convicted, he should be put to death. Haley told The Today Show:

This is a state hurt by the fact that nine people innocently were killed. We will absolutely want him to have the death penalty.

Haley also spoke to press this morning outside the historic Emanuel AME Church where the shooting took place. “There’s a very evil kid out there that we need to blame,” she said, per The Post and Courier. “I talked to my investigators and they looked pure evil in the eye.”

Haley reiterated: “We will seek the death penalty. You will absolutely pay the price.”

Roof is in custody and was flown to South Carolina last night to face charges.
