My Sheriff is happy to take some prisoners to help with his "vacancy problem".
By keeping his local, county prison full, Sheriff Doyle ensures his budget will stay inflated.
However will he fill those cells in my fairly low-crime area??
In order to maintain his staff and power, the sheriff subjects Marin's minorities to what is officially known as "disproportionate minority contact." The result is that African-Americans are incarcerated in Marin at seven times their ratio in the population and Latinos also in excess of their proportion.
the politicians have us(in California) bent over and getting fucked with this bullshit.
The prison system has more than enough money to keep these criminals in prison. I was just talking to a C.O. that works at Corcoran prison. The man was bragging about all the money he makes and most times he does nothing except babysit criminals. $7000 a month on average, not counting overtime, with overtime he averages $10,000 per month. There's also, 2 weeks paid vacation per year, paid holiday, paid sick time.
I have heard this from many a-holes who work in the prison industry.
I also asked what they do with cans and recyclables. He said nothing. They throw them away. I was dumb founded, thinking "wow. That's a huge potential money source and its going in the trash." I asked him why he doesn't take them home instead of throwing them away. He said they cant because they would get in trouble.
But yes we do need these criminals in jail. A lot of these guys being released have been getting arrested for doing criminal shit
That's because our prison system is built from the ground up to punish people, and not rehabilitate them. You take some low level drug offender and toss him in lockup for 2 years with violent, career criminals and he'll come out in their image.
I posted this on a separate article, seems relevant to this convo.
Take for instance in my hometown, small town in California. We recently had an incident in the front of a office max where two men where shot. Once the dust settled, the two men who where shot were breaking into a car. A car they had to have been following because as the story goes the owner of the car owns a gas station that's a few miles away from the office max. This man was on his way to deposit thousands of dollars to the bank, stopped at a office max, and while inside witnessed two men breaking into his car.
He then proceeds to tell an office max employee to call the police, he goes outside and confronts the men and according to witnesses the two men begin to attack the victim. The victim, who is a licensed to carry a fire arm pulls his weapon and shoots these men. They eventually died from the gunshot wounds.
Both of these men have a long list of a criminal/gang history. One of them was recently released by the state due to prison over crowding. Cops ended up finding a backpack full of weapons inside the vehicle these guys where using.
These thugs that broke into his car, are known criminals, had weapons on them to commit acts of violence. The state had just released one of these guys. A few days after being released this man goes back to his criminal ways.
I feel for the store owner(no criminal record) who is now sitting in jail because two PUNKS made a choice to do something criminal and infringe on this mans rights. I doubt very much he had murderous intentions, unlike these punks who are on record doing violent/criminal shit against there fellow citizens
That is just ... I want to say 'appalling' but I think maybe 'typical' is more appropriate. He should move to NYC, bet he'd fit in nicely with the NYPD.
I'm going to go put my head in an oven now.
Aren't there a lot of non-violent inmates in our prisons? If so, reducing their sentences seems like a big part of the solution to this problem.
Biggest non-violent offenders are drug-based criminals, but no way Joe Schmoe American will allow THEM to go free earlier.
Get out of here with your logic and reason! We've got to put more power and control over our lives in the hands of corporations that have little accountability to the public...to keep the government and the elected politicians that form it from having too much power and control over our lives!
There are a lot. Brown spearheaded the passage of that law a couple years ago that transferred non-violent offenders from state to county prisons. It was a way of complying with the Supreme Court ruling without actually complying. Now, the problem is that the state prisons are still overcrowded and the county prisons are full of non-violent offenders. They can't transfer anybody else and they have to find somewhere to put them. Had non-violent offender cases been put up for review, this problem would have been solved already.

Could be worse...they could be letting the animals go free.
Actually, they should let go the people who have been convicted of non-violent, low level crimes and keep those that commit violent crimes, large white collar crimes, etc. in prison a lot longer.
Whoa, seriously? You think convicts are 'animals?' Those are human beings who are entitled to a base level of respect at least until you know why they're in there. The prison population is as varied as the non-prison population.
Agree, but then it comes to: where do you draw the line for "low level" crimes? Small, "personal use" drug possessions don't generally result in a lengthy prison sentence unless the person already has a record.
Oh christ...we are headed for a corporate driven hell hole of a future.
How about decriminalizing all drugs first, I mean you'll slow down the rate of incarceration immensely.
Nah, they'll just get around that by giving child rapists 30 days instead of 20 years, and keeping the druggies in for decades.
you commie bastard. how dare you stop the "unguided" hand of free market capitalism. who will tactical companies sell their bullet proof vests and shorts, and pants that unzip into shorts, and gloves, and holsters, and uniforms, and "less than lethal" weapons to if you get rid of the majority of "criminals" locked up in this country for smoking and selling and carrying a plant.....
"The efforts by the governor will help protect our communities," said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.
Indeed, if you can only see the near future and not the precedent that's being created. People are not real smart.
