Car Wreck Outside Henry Kravis's Apartment

cityfile · 03/09/09 08:20AM

Last week, Henry Kravis's two publicly-traded investment vehicles reported losses of more than 90 percent "after writedowns on takeovers, mortgages and corporate loans." Now vehicles are plowing into his Park Avenue apartment building. Consider it yet another perfect metaphor for the times. [NYSD]

ian spiegelman · 09/20/08 11:17AM

Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein are the sole survivors of a plane crash that killed four in South Carolina last night. The two are in critical condition today after the Learjet they were in crashed soon after takeoff. Air traffic controllers say they saw sparks shooting from the plane before it veered and crashed in a nearby road. Barker and Goldstein are being treated at a burn center in Augusta, GA. [ETOnline]

Need a New Car? Let George Clooney Hit You From Behind

Kyle Buchanan · 08/21/08 07:20PM

Though he can usually be found perched upon his yacht in the still, blue waters of Lake Como, even a movie star like George Clooney must occasionally climb inside a car like a common plebe. When he does, accidents happen (though none on the level of Ocean's Twelve), and they could happen to you — that is, if you're an unnamed woman in Pennabilli, Italy. According to Showbiz Spy, Clooney recently rear-ended the woman (ahem) and he made it up to her in a major way:

The Story Of The Pooping Intern

Hamilton Nolan · 08/19/08 11:04AM

Last week we floated an absolutely delicious rumor-the sort of inside media gossip that we hope to be known for when future generations are considering our legacy. Specifically, it was the story of the crazy pooping intern. A summer intern at one of the networks, we heard, went on an on-the-job pooping spree, but somehow stayed on and continued her internship through the rest of the summer. Tips have poured in, and it's become clear this is the story of your worst at-work nightmare come to life. Here's how one locked toilet at NBC caused a disaster: The intern was at NBC in New York, at the famous 30 Rock (NBC has not responded to our request for comment). Our tipsters diverge a tiny bit in their details, but all agree that this intern did exist, and she did have quite an accident. They say it all happened on the intern's first day on the job, in June. Apparently, she tried to make a run to the bathroom, but didn't quite get there. One account:

Big Black Car: Prince of Darkness Mows Down Pedestrian In DC Mêlée

Pareene · 07/23/08 10:52AM

Robert Novak-respected conservative journalist/commentator and grim spectre of soulless walking death-ran over a guy in his black Corvette this morning. Hilariously, a Politico reporter got the story by walking by. Novak hit the guy and then continued merrily speeding along until a bicyclist stopped him and said "you hit someone." Novak allegedly threw his head back and cackled for a moment before shooting him. There are no details about the pedestrian's condition. Look, we need to share more details about this with you. Breaking! Literally! Car Smashes Into iO West Comedy Theater

Mark Graham · 06/26/08 07:20PM

A tipster just alerted us that a car just smashed through the front windows of iO West on Hollywood Boulevard, sometime within the last half-hour or so. Other than learning that no one was hurt, we don't have any other details at the moment. However, we can only hope that this incident wasn't the first strike in an improv turf war between the iO crowd and the rival UCBers. Let's keep the rumbles confined to the sandy beaches of Malibu, people. As they say, developing...

Hit-And-Run Apathy Video Proves People Are Bad

Hamilton Nolan · 06/06/08 08:27AM

Have you always suspected that people are fundamentally selfish, apathetic, and cold-hearted? You're right! It's proven by this video of a hit-and-run accident in Hartford, Connecticut. A 78-year-old man is struck by a car—quite an inconvenience for his fellow pedestrians and busy motorists, who all gawk openly but keep on moving. Several people reportedly called 911, but nobody bothered to, you know, go check on the guy sprawled out in the street (who's now paralyzed). Even New York's not this blasé. The video, after the jump.

After a fatal accident just two months ago, the painfully incomplete Trump Tower has managed to muck it up again, this time leaving industrial chains to blow freely in the wind and break about a dozen windows. Keep up the great work.

James Del · 03/10/08 10:39AM

Gusts near 50 MPH sent a loose chain crashing into the side of the Trump SoHo tower on Saturday night, cracking windows and showering the street with glass, officials and neighborhood residents said.

Ailing Maureen Dowd's White Knight? Prez Bush

Maggie · 01/15/08 06:02PM

Damsel Dowd in distress! President Bush to the rescue! During Bush's eight-day trip to the Middle East, the titian-topped Times columnist caught a doozy of a stomach bug and was rescued by the White House, who gave Dowd access to Dubya's doctor and a ride home on Air Force One. Awww. Frankly, we're surprised the administration let MoDo anywhere near a Bush itinerary, let alone an invitation to come along. Interesting little side note? The Washington Post reports that news organizations could pay more than $20,000 per journalist along on the journey. [WP]

'NYT' Skyscraper Investigated By City's Buildings Dept.

Maggie · 01/14/08 05:52PM

Trump Tower Soho isn't the only major new building in New York to fall into perilous disrepair of late. Last month, a couple of pedestrians walking by the New York Times' fancy-pantsy 8th Avenue building caught the wrong end of falling window glass from the skyscraper, broken by high winds. Two weeks later, sidewalks were shut down by falling ice that had formed around the building's ceramic rods. Then last Wednesday, seven windows on the 22nd, 10th and sixth floors were shattered by strong winds, prompting a Friday visit by the Department of Buildings.

Breaking: Incident At Trump Tower Soho, One Dead

Maggie · 01/14/08 02:29PM

Apparently part of the Trump Tower building in Soho just collapsed after being hit by a crane. One person may have been killed, according to reports. An eyewitness says it was a top corner, another says two floors have caved in. "I was eating lunch in the conference room of my office on Hudson Street and we watched as one entire side of a building under construction collapsed," an onlooker told us. "There are ambulances and fire trucks everywhere." Curbed has more.
